Freedom Ranger meat birds are raised using organic methods with no hormones, antibiotics or pesticides. Our chicken has a superior taste compared to fast-growth conventional birds. The meat is better for you and more flavorful. It is firm, but not tough. Freedom Ranger breeding stock is imported from the regions of Burgundy and Brittany (France). The genetic stock is derived from the American and European old heritage breed of chicken and was developed in the early 1960s to meet the highest standards of the French Label Rouge Free Range program. Currently, the Freedom Ranger genetic stock is used by most non-factory farms all across Europe and by small pastured poultry producers in the US. We as farmers enjoy the challenge of raising a healthy farm chicken with succulent flavor and texture.

Chicken
Red Ranger (also called Freedom Ranger) chicken is available by the pound. Chickens are sold as whole birds, weigh 4-5 lbs and are $6.50/lb. Availability ranges from mid-June through November.

Your Access to Fresh, Organic, Unprocessed Milk through Cowshare.

Jesse Meerman is a 5th generation dairyman and owns Green Pastures cow boarding with his wife Betsy. Jesse also sells milk to Grassfields Cheese, where the milk is made into delicious aged, organic cheeses. The Meerman family has been farming this piece of land since 1882.

In 1991, the Meermans adopted intensive grazing methods of the dairy herd, rather than conventional, confinement farming. In May of 2007, the dairy herd and farmland were certified Organic (now through OEFFA). Most of the land had been farmed organically for many years prior. We do not give the cows any hormones or antibiotics. If a cow becomes ill, we treat her with herbal remedies. The dairy also meets Grade A standards and is inspected by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development regularly.
In spring of 2005, Green Pastures was created to provide families with fresh, unprocessed, whole milk. Selling unpasteurized milk through cow shares to individuals and families is legal as outlined by MI Fresh Milk Council (www.mifreshmilkcouncil.com).

My Father Ron Campau (hense RC) was born here at the farm where he continued Dairy Farming until 1997. I came back to the farm after graduating from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Crop and Soil Science. In 2003, we offered our first ‘Shares’ from our garden. We now grow about four acres of vegetables on our 38-acre farm for distribution in the Community Garden. All of our produce is distributed through the garden share, we do not participate in any Farmers Markets. We also pasture-raise hundreds of chickens and turkeys each year. Poultry is available seasonally by pre-ordering only.
